How to Apply for a Security License in Ontario | Security Guard

Before starting the application process, it’s essential to understand the different types of security licenses in Ontario. The main categories are:

  1. Security Guard License Ontario: Required for individuals working as security guards at various establishments, events, or public spaces.
  2. Private Investigator License: Needed for those conducting private investigations or providing investigative services.
  3. Dual License: Some individuals may require both a security guard and private investigator license if they perform both roles.

Step One: Check Licensing Requirements

The first step to getting your security guard license in Ontario is to ensure you meet all the requirements. These requirements include:

  1. Completing the necessary training and tests.
  2. Being at least 18 years old.
  3. Having a clean criminal record, as per the Clean Criminal Record Regulation.
  4. Being legally allowed to work in Canada.

Step Two: Complete the Required Training

In Ontario, all security license applicants must undergo specific training programs offered by authorized training providers. On average, the security guard course and first aid/CPR training can cost around $150 to $200. The security guard test costs $39.55, and the license fee is $80. Overall, getting your security license can range from $270 to $310. The duration of the training program also varies based on the content and format of the course. Generally, the training can be completed within 30 to 40 hours through in-person classes or online modules. Some providers may offer flexible schedules to accommodate your availability.

After finishing your course, the Ministry-approved training provider will give you a TCN (Training Completion Number). You will need this TCN to book your test and proceed to step three of the process.

Step Three: Booking and Writing Your Test

It is available in both English and French. You’ll have 90 minutes for the test, with 75 minutes allotted to answer the questions. To pass the test, you’ll need to score 37 out of 60 (62%). Once you’ve completed the test, your results will be available within two business days. If, unfortunately, you do not pass the test, you have the option to retake it, but you’ll need to pay the testing fee again.

Step Four: Apply for Your Security Guard License in Ontario

To get your license online, you’ll need:

  1. A Service Ontario One-key ID account.
  2. A scanned photo (if required) that meets the size requirements.
  3. Clear scanned copies of two different valid government IDs to prove your identity and eligibility to work in Canada.
  4. A completed Guarantor Information Form signed by your guarantor.
  5. The payment for your license type.

You’ll get a digital license with a QR code as soon as your application is approved. This digital license can be used to verify your information. Once your plastic license card arrives by mail, you should replace the digital license with the physical card.
